Lopers, Skyhawks Go Down to Final Minute
Kearney, NE - The winning streaks for the Nebraska-Kearney basketball teams continued Saturday night at the Health & Sports Center but the Fort Lewis College Skyhawks didn't make it easy. Both games came down to the final minute with the 6th-ranked Loper men winning 91-85 and the UNK women rallying for an 80-74 decision. The men improve to 12-0 (5-0 RMAC) while the women run its win streak to six games (10-3, 5-0 RMAC).
The women's game, featuring two of the top 10 teams in the North Central Region, was just as exciting as the Lopers trailed by as many as seven points in the second half. FLC (7-4, 2-3 RMAC) led from the 17:37 mark of the second half until a Kalee Modlin layup with 5:02 left made it 66-64 UNK.
But, FLC came back and led 72-71 with just over a minute remaining. With the shot clock running down, sophomore Taryn Ninemire hit a three that gave the Lopers a two point lead. FLC then had back-to-back turnovers that the Lopers converted into four made free throws.
Modlin, from Knoxville, Ia., had 21 of her team-high 23 points in the second half. She was 7 of 9 from the field in the final 20 minutes and was one of three Lopers to play all 20 minutes in the second period.
Freshmen Nicole Gruntorad (16) and Anne Manning (10) came off the bench to score in double figures while Ninemire made her last two three point shots to finish with 11 points. With junior Allison Kruger in foul trouble, thirty-nine of UNK's second half points was scored by freshmen or sophomores.
UNK shot 64 percent in the second half after making only nine of 24 first half field goals (37.5). FLC hurt itself by making only 15 of 24 free throws in the second half.
Vanessa Santa Cruz (21 points, five assists) and Amy Mohr (16 points, 7 for 7 FG) led FLC.
UNK is on the road the next two weeks, first visiting Western State and UCCS and then going to Metro State and Chadron State.
