Kruger Goes Over 1,000 Points
Kearney, NE - The Nebraska-Kearney basketball teams began RMAC play with a sweep of Mesa State Saturday night at the Health & Sports Center. The men outscored Mesa by 30 points in the second half to win 95-61 while the women upset the 11th-ranked Mavericks, 69-57, by having a strong first half.
In the women's tilt, junior forward Allison Kruger became the 12th player in school history to reach 1,000 career points and UNK held Mesa to 12 percent (3 of 25) shooting in the first half in a 12 point win.
Kruger made seven of 11 shots to finish with a game-high 20 points. The Paullina, Ia., native currently has 1,012 points in her two plus year career to place 11th on the career scoring list.
The Lopers held a 16 point lead at the break as Mesa simply couldn't make a shot from the field, going nearly 10 minutes without a field goal in the first half. However, the Mavs strong rebounding (48-32) and solid free throw shooting (22 of 29) kept them in the contest and allowed them to make a late run.
UNK took a 60-40 lead on a jumper by Kalee Modlin with 7:37 left but the Lopers wouldn't score again from the field. Mesa's full court pressure forced five straight turnovers to cut the lead to eight, 63-55, with 1:55 left. Danielle Porreco misfired on a three that would've made things tighter. UNK hit six straight free shots to put the game away.
Mesa had 25 turnovers, which turned into 29 UNK points, and shot 27 percent for the night. Junior Heather Steffen had nine of her 14 points in the second half while Modlin and Anne Manning each had eight points apiece.
Natalie Rogers, on the strength of 13 free throws, had 21 points to lead Mesa.
The Loper men return home Tuesday to challenge Doane while the women are off until next Saturday when UNO visits.
