Grab Number One Seed In RMAC Tourney
Kearney, NE – The Nebraska-Kearney women's basketball team secured the number one seed in next week's RMAC Tournament by defeating the Metro State Roadrunners (13-14, 10-10 RMAC) 71-61 in front of a crowd of 4,650 at the Health and Sports Center tonight. UNK improves to 23-4 overall and 18-1 in the RMAC.
Being the No. 1 seed in the RMAC tournament is nothing new for UNK. The Lopers have been regular season champs in seven of the eight years UNK has been a member of the RMAC.
The Lopers will play next Wednesday night at 6:00 p.m. against a team to be decided. Match-ups for the RMAC tourney will be announced Saturday night but the Lopers expect to play either Chadron State or Metro State.
The Lopers forced 13 turnovers in the first half to take control of the game early on. UNK took their biggest lead of the first half, 30-17, on an Anne Manning lay-up with 7:02 to play. But the Runners came right back on a 10-2 run to cut the lead to 32-27 with 4:53 to play in the first half. UNK kept their composure and led 37-29 lead at intermission.
In the second half, the Runners hit a jumper at the 16:31 mark to cut the Loper lead to eight points, 41-33. That was as close as the Runners would get the rest of the game.
UNK was led by freshman Kalee Modlin and junior Heather Steffen with 16 points a piece. Manning came off the bench to finish the game in double figures with ten points. Freshman Nicole Gruntorad started the first game of her young career in place of Allison Kruger. Gruntorad finished the game with eight points.
It looks as though the Lopers will be without Kruger for the remainder of the season. Kruger, who recently re-aggrevated her broken right foot, is UNK's leading scorer and rebounder.
The Runners were lead by Malene Lindholm and Martina Gandzalova each scoring 13 points.
