Women Win 4th in a Row
Kearney, NE - The Nebraska-Kearney basketball teams extended its winning streaks Saturday night in Las Vegas, N.M., as the Lopers beat New Mexico Highlands 79-51 (women) and 83-66 (men). With the win, the 14th-ranked men (10-0, 3-0 RMAC) tie the school mark for best start ever, first set by the 1995-96 team, while the women won its fourth straight game to improve to 8-3 (3-0 RMAC) overall.
The women's game wasn't as tight as the Cowgirls (1-7, 0-3 RMAC) trailed by at least 10 points for the last 22 minutes of the contest. All nine Lopers scored with five different players being in double figures. The Lopers made 52 percent of its shots while holding Highlands to just 29.8 percent (17 of 58) from the field. That is the lowest mark a UNK opponent has shot this year.
Freshman center Kalee Modlin led the Lopers with 20 points on 8 of 14 shooting while junior Allison Kruger had 13 points and a team-best eight rebounds. Junior Heather Steffen chipped in 12 points and seven rebounds and sophomore Taryn Ninemire had all of her 10 points after the break. With two made threes, Ninemire is closing in on 100 for her career (97). Finally, Anne Manning came off the bench to add 13 points on 5 of 8 shooting.
UNK hosts Adams State next Friday and then Fort Lewis Saturday.
