Will Take on USC in second round
Kearney, NE - The Nebraska-Kearney women's basketball team used a balanced scoring attack to advance to the second round of the RMAC tournament as they defeated Chadron State, 67-54, Wednesday night at the Health and Sports Center. The Lopers improve their record to 24-4 on the season while Chadron finishes 13-15. UNK improves its all-time RMAC tourney mark to 20-3.
UNK dominated the first half behind the hot shooting of senior Emilee Gusso. The lone senior on the Loper squad started the game connecting on her first three shots from behind the arc on her way to scoring a career high 11 points. The Lopers took advantage of 17 first half turnovers by the Eagles to take a 38-26 lead at intermission.
The Lopers led by as many as 20 points in the second half but Chadron hung around and cut the lead to ten points, 64-54, with 1:37 left. But, UNK was able to hang on as junior Heather Steffen knocked down a three with :28 second left to ice the game for the Lopers.
Four Lopers finished in double figures led by freshman Kalee Modlin with 15. Sophomore Taryn Ninemire finished with 13 points including three of six from behind the arc to tie Beth Swift's single-season three point record (86).
Steffen finished the game with her eighth double double of the season, scoring 11 points and grabbing 14 rebounds. Finally, sophomore reserve Erin Jones finished the game with a career high eight points on four of five shooting. Jones has tallied 20 points over the last three games, helping UNK overcome the loss of leading scorer Allison Kruger.
The Eagles were led by Marie Worsham who finished with 13 points.
The Lopers are back in action this Saturday as they face Southern Colorado at the World Arena in Colorado Springs at 12 p.m. CST in the second round of the RMAC tournament.
