Women Rally Past Regis to Win 14th Straight
Kearney, NE - Junior forward Heather Steffen played the best game of her career to lead the Nebraska-Kearney women's basketball team past Regis, 91-80, Thursday night at the Health & Sports Center. UNK (18-3) extends its win streak to 14 games and remains perfect in league play at 13-0. Regis drops to 9-3 in the RMAC and to 14-6 overall.
Steffen, from West Point, had a career high 25 points,19 of which came in the second half, and also grabbed eight rebounds. She went an incredible 7 of 7 from behind the three point arc, which is just one shy of the UNK single game record (Beth Swift, 8, on three occasions). Steffen did break Swift's three point percentage record (80.0/8 for 10) for a game (min. 7 attempts). Coming into tonight's game, Steffen had made only 16.7 percent (5-30) of her three point shots.
Regis held a three point lead, 60-57, with 7:29 remaining before the Lopers exploded for 18 straight points. During this stretch, UNK went 6 for 7 from the floor, including a 3 for 3 effort from the three point line. Steffen had nine points in the decisive run, two traditional threes and an old fashioned three point play.
In addition to Steffen's great game, junior Allison Kruger had her usual solid effort, notching another double double with 23 points and a career-high 13 rebounds. Freshman Nicole Gruntorad had yet another solid game off the bench, scoring 17 points and dishing out six assists. It's her fifth double digit effort in the last six games. Freshman Kalee Modlin also scored in double figures (11) and pulled down seven rebounds.
Leading the way for Regis was Molly Marrin with 16 points. Haley MacNeil had a double double scoring 12 points and pulling down ten rebounds.
UNK plays again February 14th at Colorado Christian.
