Lopers Beat Mavs for 10th time in 11 Tries
Kearney, NE - Five players were in double figures and Nebraska-Kearney led from start to finish in a 94-66 victory over rival Nebraska-Omaha Saturday afternoon at the Health & Sports Center. The Lopers (6-3) have now won 10 of the last 11 games with UNO who drop to 6-4 on the year.
Junior Heather Steffen led the way, tying her career-high in points (24), grabbing 11 rebounds, handing out seven assists and having zero turnovers in 29 minutes of work. North Platte freshman Anne Manning came off the bench to tally a career-best 21 points and pull down eight rebounds. Her production in the post helped the Lopers overcome the loss of leading scorer Allison Kruger (11 points, four rebounds) who played only six minutes in the first half due to foul trouble.
UNK shot 56.9 percent from the floor and had 27 assists, third most in school history and 11 off the school record. Defensively, the Lopers held UNO's leading scorer, Tanya Hammes, to zero points and the team to 36 percent shooting. Freshman Kalee Modlin (16 points, six rebounds) made eight of nine shots and combined with Manning, Steffen and Kruger to help the Loper outscore the Mavs 44-26 in the paint.
UNO missed nine of its first 10 shots to trail the Lopers 16-5 seven minutes into the game. Down 34-13 at the 6:42 mark after a Manning layup, the Mavs finished the first half on a 22-11 run that put them down only 10 at the break. But, UNO wouldn't get closer than 12 points in the second half and trailed by more than 20 for the last 12 minutes of the contest.
Also for UNK, guards Taryn Ninemire had 15 points and eight assists and Emilee Gusso had five assists, three points and two steals.
UNO was led by Lindsey Petersen (22 points, six rebounds) and Sara Peterson (17 points).
UNK plays again January 3rd at Southern Colorado.
