Basketball Begins New Year with Wins

Lopers Sweep Thuderwolves After Long Layoff

Kearney, NE - The Nebraska-Kearney basketball teams began 2003 on a good note by sweeping Southern Colorado on Friday, January 3rd,  in Pueblo. The 14th-ranked Loper men, in the first action since December 17th, beat a regionally-ranked USC squad 86-68 while the UNK women, in its first game since December 21st, defeated the 'Wolves 76-64.

For the UNK men, the 9-0 start is the second best in school history, trailing only the 1995-96 Lopers effort of 10-0. The Loper women, meanwhile, have won three straight to move to 7-3 on the year.

UNK trailed 39-35 at the break and by as many as seven in the second half. UNK went on a 10-2 run midway through the second half that erased a 49-43 USC lead and put the Lopers ahead for good. UNK didn’t have a comfortable lead until a Nicole Gruntorad jumper made it 68-60 with a little over four minutes to go.

Gruntorad, having her second best offensive night of the year, led the team with 20 points on 8 of 12 shooting. Fellow freshman reserve Anne Manning tallied 11 points and eight rebounds while freshmen center Kalee Modlin had 16 points and seven boards. Junior Allison Kruger (13 points, five rebounds, three steals and three assists) also had a strong game.

UNK held USC to just 31 percent shooting in the second half while forcing 22 turnovers for the game. UNK also out boarded the 'Wolves by six including grabbing 18 offensive rebounds.

Nadia Fercha and Alicia Uresk combined for 39 points and 18 rebounds for USC.

UNK plays at New Mexico Highlands Saturday.
