Western No Match for Lopers

Basketball Streaks Continue

      Kearney, NE - The Nebraska-Kearney basketball teams finished the first of two RMAC road weekends with perfect 2-0 records. After winning at Colo.-Colo. Springs Friday night, the Loper squads won at Western State Saturday night in Gunnison. The 5^th-ranked men claimed a 106-84 win while the women were victorious, 79-52.

      UNK has won eight straight (12-3) and leads the league with a perfect 7-0 record. UNK has a two-game lead over five different teams in the race to be the No. 1 seed at the league tournament.

      Sophomore Taryn Ninemire sunk 4 of 7 three pointers to tie her season high of 20 points. Junior Allison Kruger made 8 of 10 free throws to finish with 12 points and also had a strong all-around effort, having six steals, eight rebounds and three swats. Freshman Anne Manning led the reserves with 13 with Nicole Gruntorad (nine points, seven rebounds, six assists, five steals) making the most of her 25 minutes.

      UNK tallied the game's first eight points and pretty much dominated all night despite foul trouble in the second half. Western (3-12, 2-5 RMAC) shot just 33.9 percent for the game and only had 16 first half points. The Lopers continue to improve in the turnover department, having just 14 against the Mountaineers. UNK had a season low 13 TO's the night before at UCCS.

      Things get much tougher for UNK next week as the Lopers play at Metro State Thursday and Chadron State Saturday. Both UNK teams lost to the Roadrunners last year while its always a tough game at in-state rival Chadron.
