FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
February 26, 2003
Steffen ties single-game rebounding mark
Kearney, NE - West Point junior Heather Steffen led the Nebraska-Kearney women's basketball team as the Lopers had a big second half to defeat the Chadron State Eagles (13-13, 10-8 RMAC), 76-51, Wednesday night at the Health & Sports Center. UNK improves to 22-4 overall and 17-1 in the RMAC.
Steffen scored 17 points and tied the UNK single game school rebounding record of 18. Fourteen of those came in the second half, as did all of her points. Julie Volquardson had 18 boards against Missouri Western State in a 1984-85 game. It was Steffen's seventh double double on the season as well as her third straight.
UNK's leading scorer on the season, junior Allison Kruger, didn't play in the second half due to a stress fracture in her foot, an injury that has reduced her minutes the past few games. It is the same foot, and injury, that forced her to miss most of last year. She finished the game with seven points in 13 minutes.
The Lopers struggled from the field in the first half, connecting on just 12 of 36 shots (33.3). The Eagles shot much better, connecting on 9-18 field goal attempts, but were plagued with 17 first half turnovers and the Lopers took a 30-23 lead into the locker room.
UNK came out firing in the second half, making 16 of 32 shots from the field, including 6 of 11 (54.5) effort from beyond the arc. The Eagles came out with a quick bucket at the 19:46 mark to cut the lead to five points, but that was as close as they would get and the Lopers went on to seal the victory by 25 points.
Also leading the way for UNK was sophomore Taryn Ninemire with 18 points on 4 of 8 shooting from behind the arc. With 81 threes on the season, Ninemire needs six more to break Beth Swift's single season record of 87, set just last year. Freshman Anne Manning had another solid game off the bench as she added eight points in 19 minutes of action.
Leading the way for the Eagles was Marie Worsham with nine points.
UNK returns to action tomorrow night as they host Metro St. at 6:00 p.m. at the Health and Sports Center.
