FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
February 23, 2003
Ninemire, Steffen Lead the Way
Kearney, NE - Julie Jestus banked in a shot from just inside the half court line as the buzzer sounded to lift the Regis Rangers to a 76-74 win over Nebraska-Kearney Saturday afternoon in Denver. The improbable shot ends the Lopers' 17 game win streak and gives Regis (18-7, 13-4 RMAC) its second win over UNK (21-4, 16-1 RMAC) in 15 tries.
The blue and gold seemingly had the game won when freshman Nicole Gruntorad hit a turn around jumper in the lane with just around four ticks left on the block. UNK got the chance to move ahead when Jestus went one for two at the free throw line with 25 seconds to go. Gruntorad had tied the game at 72 all with two clutch free throws at the 42 second mark.
Regis called a timeout after Gruntorad's shot. With 3.3 seconds left and 90 feet to go, Hayley MacNeil passed the ball to Rachel Caliga who in turn found Jestus (team-high 20 points).
UNK was paced by the 1-2 punch of sophomore Taryn Ninemire, who hit six threes for a career-high 26 points, and junior Heather Steffen. The West Point native scored 24 points, one off her career best, and grabbed 12 rebounds for her sixth double double of the year. For Ninemire, it's her fourth straight game over 20 points. She also was a big reason why Regis' leading scorer, Molly Marrin, was held to seven points on 3 of 11 shooting from the field.
The Lopers led 37-30 at the break mainly on the strength of strong perimeter shooting. Regis' managed to bottle up UNK post players all afternoon long and that led to a 64-57 lead with seven minutes remaining. UNK came back to tie it at 68 all with four to go but only grabbed the lead when Gruntorad's jumper fell.
The Lopers close out the regular season with Chadron State (Wednesday) and Metro State (Thursday).
