Loper Women Win 13th Straight

Remain Perfect in The RMAC at 12-0

Kearney, NE - On a night where the Nebraska-Kearney men's team set a school record for consecutive wins with 19, the UNK women picked up their 13th consecutive win with an 86-70 victory over a tough Ft. Hays State squad.  The crowd of 3,655 was the third largest for a Loper women's home game.

Both teams struggled from the field early, particularly Hays, as they shot just 23 percent from the field in the first half. The Lopers took a 35-17 lead into the locker room as sophomore Taryn Ninemire led all scorers with 11 points.

The second half was a track meet as both teams shot red hot from the field.  UNK opened the lead to 31- points, 61-30, with 12:03 remaining. But, the Tigers were able to claw back into the game but couldn't get any closer than 14 points (82-68) as the Lopers went on to seal the victory by 16 points.  The Lopers shot 53.8 percent from the field in the second half and the Tigers shot 52.6 percent.

The Lopers shot an amazing 45 free throws, connecting on 30 of them for 67 percent.  The 45 attempts is the second most all time in UNK history (51 vs. Oklahoma City in 1991) and 30 made free throws was good for third all time.

The Lopers had a very balanced scoring attack as five players scored in double figures. Ninemire led the Lopers with 19 points, just two shy of her career high. Junior Heather Steffen was close behind with 18 points and eight rebounds. Freshman Nicole Gruntorad had another solid game off the bench as she scored 13 points and dished out three assists.

Hays led by Katie Rhodes with 23 points.

The Lopers return to action Thursday as they host Regis at 6:00 p.m.
