Women’s Basketball Wins by 59

Lopers Go 1-1 in Florida

            Kearney, NE – The 23rd-ranked Nebraska-Kearney women’s basketball team picked up its first win of the year in convincing fashion Saturday night in the second round of the Holiday Isle Classic in Tavernier, Fla.  All five starters, and two reserves, scored in double figures as UNK routed Nova Southeastern (Fla.), 116-57.

            The point total is the most in school history, topping several efforts of 114. And the assist total of 31 is third highest in school lore, just seven shy of the UNK record.

            The Lopers tallied 11 of the game’s first 13 points and led by double figures for the last 37 minutes of the contest. UNK’s biggest lead of the game came late in the second half at 61 points, 110-49. The blue and gold shot 43 percent form the floor, including an 11 of 28 effort from the three point line. UNK’s defense forced 40 Knight turnovers, 22 coming off Loper steals.

            Sophomore center Kalee Modlin had 15 of her team-high 22 points in the first half. In 15 minutes of playing time in the first half, the Iowa native made seven of eight field goal attempts. She finished the game with seven boards and a team best six steals. Also getting out of the gates strong was Leigh freshman Liz Fischer, who notched 15 of her 19 points in the first half. 

            Junior Taryn Ninemire had 13 of her 16 points in the second half and also had a team high seven assists and four steals. Also in double digits were West Point senior Heather Steffen (14), North Platte sophomore Anne Manning (13), Iowa senior Allison Kruger (11) and Colorado junior Amber Whitlock (10). Kruger also had a team-high eight rebounds while Whitlock scored all of her points at the free throw line.

            Marvelous Washington led NSU (0-2) with 16 points on seven of 14 shooting.

            The Lopers host the Holiday Inn/Captain’s Table Thanksgiving Classic this Friday and Saturday. UNK first plays Winona State, Minn., Friday at 7:00 p.m.
