Rangers No Match for Women’s BasketballLopers Rout NW Oklahoma State Kearney, NE – Less than 48 hours after winning at Mesa State, the Nebraska-Kearney women’s basketball sunk a school-record 14 three pointers in a 96-37 rout of NW Oklahoma State this afternoon at the Health & Sports Center. UNK improves to 6-2 while the NAIA Rangers drop to 3-9 on the season. After the Lopers shrugged of a sluggish start, NWOSU didn’t stand a chance. UNK forced 33 turnovers and held the Rangers to a 30.4 percent effort from the field. Take way the effort by leading scorer Jessica Schanbacher (21) and the Rangers made just 16 percent of its field goals (5 of 31). Six different Lopers made at least one three pointer on the day with sophomore reserve guard Nicole Gruntorad (14 points, four 3’s) knocking down the 14th triple of the day. That came at around the 8:00 minute mark of the second half. The previous record for threes in a game was 13, set three years ago in a home win over Nebraska Wesleyan. And the 28 three point attempts today breaks the UNK mark by one, set just last year vs. St. Martin’s (Wash.). All 10 Lopers who suited up scored with everyone playing at least 16 minutes and no Loper logging more than 25 minutes. Fairfield junior Taryn Ninemire made five of eight three point shots to lead the team in scoring with 23, three shy of her career high. Among other starters, West Point senior Heather Steffen was close to a rare triple double (11 points, nine rebounds, seven assists). UNK out rebounded the Rangers by 24, including a 20-6 edge on the offensive glass. In a very rare occurrence, all 10 Lopers pulled down at least one offensive rebound. North Platte sophomore reserve forward Anne Manning grabbed nine boards while Chadron redshirt freshman Mary Connealy had five rebounds and six points off the pine. The blue and gold heads to UNO Saturday for its last game before a holiday break. |
