Women’s Basketball Signs Omaha NativeLopers Add Post Player Kearney, NE – Nebraska-Kearney women’s basketball coach Carol Russell announced today that Millard North star Amy Mathis has signed a national letter of intent to play basketball for the Lopers. "Amy is a great addition to our Loper family. She is very athletic, is a great shooter and can play several positions on the floor," Russell said. “With her enthusiastic personality and strong academic background, she will fit right in with our team” This is the first recruit for the Lopers this year. UNK has two seniors, forwards Allison Kruger and Heather Steffen, on this year’s team. A six-foot forward, Mathis has earned honorable mention Class “A” All-State honors the past two years, in addition to earning second-team All-Metro accolades last winter. She averaged 13.8 points and 8.4 rebounds per game last season. During the summer, she was on the Daubert Pinnacle All-Star team that competed at the Miss Basketball tournament and at Junior Nationals in Washington D.C. "I decided to commit to UNK because I felt it was an all-around good fit. It what I was looking for both academically and athletically,” Mathis said in a statement. “I felt very comfortable with the players and coaches on my official visit. I’m very excited to join such a successful basketball program and to become a Loper!” Also a track star for the Mustangs, Mathis placed fifth at the 2003 state track meet in the shot put. Academically, she is a member of the National Honor Society and a three-time academic letter winner. UNK plays at Nebraska tomorrow in an exhibition game before opening the regular season next weekend in Florida. |
