Lopers Dominate in the Post

Kearney, Neb. –   The Nebraska-Kearney women’s basketball team had a plus 33 rebounding edge and dominated in the paint all day long in a 80-65 victory over Colorado State-Pueblo Sunday afternoon at the Health & Sports Center.

The RMAC opener for both, the win helps UNK (2-6) end a six game losing streak. The Thunderwolves are also 2-6 on the year.

UNK out rebounded CSUP, 55-22, including a 19-9 margin in offensive caroms. The domination on the glass helped the Lopers have 23 second chance points. For the game, UNK out scored CSUP 44-22 in the paint.

In a loss to Northern Michigan earlier this year, UNK had a plus 16 rebounding edge (48-32).

The blue and gold needed to dominate in the lane as CSUP made seven of its first 11 three point tries to get out to a 29-17 edge 10 minutes into the game.

However, CSUP went 20 minutes before making another three, misfiring on 12 straight triple shots.

By the 10 minute mark of the second half, the Lopers led 62-51 and had control of the game. The Thunderwolves, who finished 10-27 from the three point line, didn’t get closer then eight points the rest of the day.

North Platte junior Anne Manning had 20 points, three off her career high, and 12 rebounds, tying her career best effort.

Eleven of her rebounds came on the offensive end as she was 9 of 13 from the floor.

In her first collegiate start, Lincoln freshman Melissa Hinkley scored 17 points and five rebounds. She was coming off a 17-point effort at North Dakota last Sunday.

Junior center Kalee Modlin (11 points, nine rebounds) was one rebound shy of a double double while Colorado senior Amber Whitlock and Lexington junior Erin Jones each tallied nine points.

UNK, shooting 47.5 percent from the floor, scored a season-high 80 points thanks to 22 of 25 shooting at free throw line and having only seven turnovers after the break.

Hilary Rehfeld led CSUP with 17 points and five rebounds.

The Lopers travel to Western State and Mesa State next weekend.
