Lopers Win Seventh Straight

Kearney, NE —Three post players for the Nebraska-Kearney women’s basketball team combined to score 46 points to lead the Lopers to a 72-58 win at Colorado-Colorado Springs Friday night.

UNK (8-6, 6-0 RMAC) has won seven in a row while the Lions (5-8) fall to 1-6 in RMAC play.

The Lopers get a bit of revenge as well as UCCS upset UNK, 68-66, last year in Kearney. It was just the Lopers second-ever home conference loss.

Junior center Kalee Modlin had 17 of her season-high 21 points in the first half, in addition to eight boards, while junior forward Anne Manning got going after halftime and finished with 13 points and eight rebounds.

Finally, Omaha freshman Amy Mathis came off the bench to tally 12 points and grab five rebounds.

An 11-0 run late in the first half broke a 20 all tie and gave the Lopers lead lead for good. Up by 10 at the break, 37-27, UNK then withstood several Lion rallies in the second half.

UCCS got the lead down to three points twice, 45-42 and 50-47, but UNK had a response each time.

On the last occasion, Lexington junionr Erin Jones (four points, five rebounds) hit a bucket from the baseline to push the lead to five, starting an 8-2 run that put away UCCS for good.

UNK dominated the glass, 54-33, and took advantage of some poor Lion free throw shooting (8 of 22) as well.

UCCS also struggled from the three point line, making only 6 of 24 tries.

With her strong effort tonight, Modlin moves into 11th place on the UNK career scoring list (1,137), passing Jodi Stineman (1,124) and former teammate Taryn Ninemire (1,135).

Jennie Sauter (16 points, 10 rebounds) had a double double for UCCS.

UNK plays at West Division New Mexico Highlands tomorrow.
