Women Cagers Win Again

Lopers Dominate Mesa State

Kearney, NE - Senior guard Amber Whitlock scored a career-high 17 points to lead the Nebraska-Kearney women's basketball team to an 63-51 win at Mesa State Saturday night in Grand Junction, Colo.

The Lopers (4-6, 3-0 RMAC) third straight win, Mesa falls to 4-7 (1-2 RMAC) on the year with the setback.

Whitlock (Stoneham, Colo.) went 11 of 12 at the line to get most of her offensive output. She also was 3 of 5 from the field.

In a defensive game that featured 50 fouls, the Lopers managed to out shoot Mesa, 41 to 33 percent. UNK sunk 25 of 36 free throws while Mesa attempted only 18 free shots.

UNK also had a plus eight margin in rebounding, 44-36.

The Lopers took control of the contest with a 9-2 run midway through the first half. Ahead 20-17, the run gave the Lopers a nine point advantage and Mesa didn't threaten the rest of the night.

Omaha freshman Amy Mathis came off the bench to score 13 points (6 of 6 at the line) and grab four rebounds.

Her play in the post was key as junior center Kalee Modlin (five points, six rebounds), the Lopers leading scorer on the season, fouled out and played just 12 minutes.

Pleasanton senior center Jenny Brown also helped the Loper cause as she had five points and five rebounds in 14 minutes work.

Finally, North Platte junior Anne Manning had nine points and a team-best seven rebounds in 31 minutes.

Rosa Masler had a double double (13 points, 15 rebounds) to lead Mesa.

UNK is off until January 4th when Upper Iowa visits the Health & Sports Center.
