Women’s Basketball Falls to No. 7 UND

UNK Ends Tough Road Swing

Kearney, Neb.  - Six players were in double figures to lead the 7th-ranked North Dakota Sioux to a 102-68 victory over the Nebraska-Kearney women’s basketball team Sunday afternoon in Grand Forks, N.D.

The Sioux, who beat RMAC-member Fort Lewis (92-71) Friday night, improve to 8-2 on the year while UNK (1-6) has dropped six in a row for the first time since the 1987-88 season.

That squad dropped 11 straight to set the UNK mark for longest losing streak.

UNK was in the game today for about the first 17 minutes, trailing by just a 36-29 count with 3:30 left in the first half.

UND  went on a 20-6 run over the next six minutes to grab a 56-35 lead with 16:59 left. The Sioux just built its lead from there.

The 102 points allowed by UNK is the third most in school history and the most since Mesa State scored an even 100 in a January 1991 game.

The Lopers shot a season-high 53.5 percent from the field (23 of 43) but 28 turnovers was too much to overcome.

The Sioux, who shot 62 percent in the second half and 59 percent for the game (40 of 68), sunk 11 of 21 three point shots and also out rebounded UNK by six, 30-24.

True freshmen Amy Mathis (Omaha) and Melissa Hinkley (Lincoln) each tallied 17 points to lead the blue and gold.

Mathis was an impressive 6 of 6 from the field, including a 3 for 3 effort from three point land, while Hinkley made 5 of 6 shots.

Junior center Kalee Modlin (Knoxville, Ia.) sunk 7 of 8 free throws to reach 15 points while senior guard Amber Whitlock (Stoneham, Colo.) made 4 of 8 shots from the field to finish with an even 10 points.

Freshman Ashley Langen made 7 of 8 shots from the field to tally a game-high 18 points for UND. Chelsea Hausauer and Carissa Jahner each were 6 of 10 from the field to combine for 30 points.

UNK finally returns home next Sunday when Colorado State-Pueblo visits at 1:00 p.m.
