Mathis, Modlin Lead Lopers to WinLopers Continue Home Streak Over Chadron Kearney, Neb. – Freshman Amy Mathis scored a game-high 20 points and Junior Kalee Modlin notched a double double to lead the Nebraska-Kearney women's basketball team to a 88-77 win over Chadron State Friday night at the Health & Sports Center. The regular season finale for both, UNK improves to 14-13 (12-7 RMAC) while the Eagles finish at 7-20 (6-13 RMAC). The Lopers have made the eight team RMAC Tournament, which begins next Wednesday, and will be no higher then a fifth seed. This will be the first time UNK had played an RMAC tourney game on the road. Chadron, which beat UNK earlier year, came all the way back from a 12-point halftime deficit thanks to strong three point shooting. The Eagles, who shot an icy 32 percent from the field in the first half, were 8 of 11 from beyond the arc in the final 20 minutes. After Chadron led for three minutes midway through the second half, UNK held a four point lead before six straight points by Fawn Trepka gave CSC its last lead of the night, 64-63, with 8:12 to play. UNK responded with a 15-7 spurt that featured three triples by Mathis and put the Lopers ahead by seven, 78-71, with just over four minutes to play. The Eagles, who haven't won in Kearney since 1988, didn't get closer then six points the rest of the way. A graduate of Millard North, Mathis had 13 second half points and was 4 of 9 from three point land. She also added five rebounds and three assists. Modlin (17 points, 12 rebounds) had her sixth double double of the season while North Platte junior Anne Manning (13 points, six rebounds) and Hinkley (seven points, seven rebounds) were strong off the bench. Guard Erin Scherry led the Eagles with 18 points. |
