Big Second Half Sparks CU over Women’s Basketball

Freshman Mathis Has Double Double

            Kearney, Neb. – The Creighton women’s basketball team made its first nine shots of the second half en route to an 87-57 exhibition win over Nebraska-Kearney Saturday afternoon in Omaha.

            UNK, which out rebounded the ‘Jays in the game (43-37), trailed by just a 39-29 count at the half but Creighton hit four threes in the first three minutes of the second half to quickly get its lead to 20, 53-33, and never looked back.

             CU finished the second half making 60.6 percent of its shots (20 of 33) while holding the Lopers to a 32.3 percent effort (10 of 31).

            The ‘Jays, with 16 steals, also forced 27 Loper turnovers.

            Four UNK players were in double figures, led by junior Kalee Modlin (Knoxville, Ia.) with 14 points.

            The center, who came into the game averaging nearly 20 points in her last three games vs. D1 competition, was 5 of 10 from the field while also grabbing five rebounds.

            North Platte junior forward Anne Manning had 11 points and nine rebounds while freshman forward Amy Mathis (Millard North) had 10 points and a team-high 10 rebounds off the bench.

            On the perimeter, senior Amber Whitlock (Stoneham, Colo.) had 11 points.

            Three Bluejays were in double figures, including forward Angie Janis (20) and All-MVC guard Laura Spanheimer (18). She also had six assists and two steals in 21 minutes.

            UNK hosts UNO in the season opener November 15th.
