Women's Basketball Adds VolentineTalented Perimeter Player Kearney, Neb. – Nebraska-Kearney women's basketball coach Carol Russell announced today that North Platte High star Angela Volentine has signed a national letter of intent to play basketball for the Lopers next season. "Angela is a great addition to our Loper family. She has a very out going personality and has a strong work ethic," Russell said. “With her desire to be part of our winning tradition, she will help us get to that next level. She is a great person and I am proud to have her join our program.” She is the fourth high school senior to join the Lopers, following Elm Creek standout Jade Meads and Colorado natives Lindsey Eggleston (Buena Vista) and Kassi Schuppe (Iliff). A 5-8 guard, Volentine averaged 16.8 points and 6.2 rebounds per game this past season for the Bulldogs. Her play helped NPHS post a 17-4 record and earn a birth in the district finals. The school record holder for three pointers made in a career and a single game, Volentine was named to the Class A All-State team that past two years by the Associated Press, Omaha World Herald and Lincoln Journal Star. She also was named the North Platte Telegraph's Area Player of the Year for the 2003-04 season while being KNOP-TV's Area Player of the Year for the 2004-05 season. Also a member of the Bulldog volleyball and track teams, Volentine maintains a grade point average over a 3.5 and is a member of the National Honor Society. UNK has made the NCAA Tournament in nine of the last 10 years and will return its top two scorers, Kalee Modlin and Amy Mathis, off last year's 14-14 squad. |
