Beginning his third year
as the head wrestling coach of the University of the Nebraska at Kearney
Wrestling Team, Marc Bauer is poised to continue the Lopers strong
presence in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference and NCAA Division II.
In his first season at the helm, UNK had one of it’s most
successful seasons ever. Bauer guided the team to their first ever RMAC/NCAA
West Regional Championship. After winning the title, Bauer had five
All-Americans at the NCAA National Division II Championships, tied for the
most in school history. UNK placed eighth in the nation, best among all
RMAC schools.
Bauer did not go unrecognized for his efforts. He was named RMAC
Coach of the Year and Rookie Coach of the Year by Amateur Wrestling News.
Last season Bauer had a young team that was then hit with some
unexpected injuries. UNK still had a solid fourth place showing at the
RMAC/West Region Championships and then placed 23rd at nationals. Six
Lopers qualified for the NCAA’s with two earning All-American honors.
Off the mat, UNK had an unprecedented five Academic All-Americans.
Prior to his current position, Bauer was an assistant coach at UNK
under Jeff Cardwell for four years. At the same time, he was head
wrestling coach at Horizon Middle School. After three years of teaching,
Bauer returned to UNK to complete his Master’s degree in Physical
Education. He also has served as the Nebraska Junior National Director and
Head Coach.
A graduate of Kearney High School, Bauer attended the University of
Nebraska at Omaha, where he distinguished himself on the mat and in the
classroom. The three-time All-American won an individual North Central
Conference Championships and was a member of the 1991 Division II National
Championship team. He posted a career record of 95-32-2.
He earned his Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education and was a
three-time Academic All-American and was selected as a NCC All-Academic
Team member.
A standout at Kearney High, Bauer compiled a 107-34-2 career prep
record, while becoming a four-time state qualifier and a two-time state
placer. For his prep career accomplishments, Bauer was inducted into the
Nebraska Scholastic Wrestling Coaches (NSWCA) Hall of Fame in 1997.
Marc and his wife Beth have four children: Ryan, Scott, Allison and
Julia.
