Adams Holds off Wrestling

No. 7 Beats No. 8

Kearney, NE – The 8th-ranked Nebraska-Kearney wrestling team won four of the last five matches but it wasn’t enough as the 7th-ranked Adams State Grizzlies claimed a 21-17 win over the Lopers Friday night at the Health & Sports Center.

Adams is now 1-1 on the year while UNK falls to 1-5. It was the RMAC opener for both.

UNK, competing tonight without three starters due to injury, lost the first four matches to trail 17-0. The key wins for Adams in this stretch were at 149 lbs. and 165 lbs. Brandon Meis got a takedown 20 seconds into overtime to beat Jeremy Kirk at 149 lbs. and then Scott Cleve tallied four points in the third period to upset 6th-ranked Aaron Dalton at 165 lbs.

After freshman Caleb Young won by major decision at 174 lbs., sophomore Jeff Sylvester kept the Lopers chances alive by getting his team-leading 12th pin of the year. But, while UNK won the final two matches, Adams staved off pin attempts to claim the dual.

The Lopers head to Ohio next weekend for the National Duals.
