Adams Holds off Wrestling

No. 7 Beats No. 8

            Kearney, NE – The 8^th-ranked Nebraska-Kearney wrestling team won four of the last five matches but it wasn’t enough as the 7^th-ranked Adams State Grizzlies claimed a 21-17 win over the Lopers Friday night at the Health & Sports Center.

            Adams is now 1-1 on the year while UNK falls to 1-5. It was the RMAC opener for both.

            UNK, competing tonight without three starters due to injury, lost the first four matches to trail 17-0. The key wins for Adams in this stretch were at 149 lbs. and 165 lbs. Brandon Meis got a takedown 20 seconds into overtime to beat Jeremy Kirk at 149 lbs. and then Scott Cleve tallied four points in the third period to upset 6^th-ranked Aaron Dalton at 165 lbs.

            After freshman Caleb Young won by major decision at 174 lbs., sophomore Jeff Sylvester kept the Lopers chances alive by getting his team-leading 12^th pin of the year. But, while UNK won the final two matches, Adams staved off pin attempts to claim the dual.
