One of Nebraska’s Most Decorated Prep Athletes

Kearney, NE – Brandon Brill, a four-time state finalist and three-time state champion at Kearney High School, has signed a national letter of intent to wrestle at Nebraska-Kearney, it was announced today by head coach Marc Bauer.

“It’s a great honor to have Brandon as a member of the UNK wrestling program. We feel very fortunate that he has chosen to continue his career here. He will be an enormous asset to our program,” Bauer said. “Our recent success has attracted outstanding young men like Brandon.”

Brill, who will compete at 133 lbs. in college, recently was named Nebraska’s state winner of the Dave Schultz High School Excellence Award. It’s the highest award given to a high school senior in wrestling. In each state, the award goes to a senior, with selection based equally on wrestling success, scholastic achievement and character, citizenship and community leadership. Brill’s named will be engraved on the Dave Schultz High School Excellence State Winners plaque that is displayed at the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in Stillwater, Okla.

“Any time we have the opportunity to recruit a product out of Kearney High like Brandon, we need to do everything we can to get him here. We feel UNK is a great match for Brandon,” Bauer said. “By being part of our program, Brandon will give our local community the opportunity to follow his collegiate career more closely. His level of expertise will continue to give our program the boost that it needs to maintain a high level of competitiveness.”

Brill managed a 122-3 career record at Kearney High where he won four district and four conference titles. The Kearney Hub’s Area Wrestler of the Year, Brill also is a two-time member of both the National Team and USA National Duals team. Academically, Brill is a member of the National Arts Honor Society and has been selected to the all-state and all-conference academic teams.

“Brandon is a very technically sound wrestler. He has a tremendous ability to attach to his opponents at all levels. That, combined with his athleticism and national level experience, has put him into a position to make a smooth transition into college wrestling,” Bauer said.

UNK had its best season ever in 2002-03, placing runner up at the NCAA Division II Championships and winning the National Duals team title in January.

Bauer added he expects several more recruits will sign soon.
