Wrestling Advances FourLopers 4-5 in 1st Round Kearney, Neb. – The 3rd-ranked Nebraska-Kearney wrestling team went 4-5 in the first round of the NCAA Championships this morning in Omaha. The second session will begin at 6:00 p.m. and go to around 9:30. It will feature two rounds of the consolation bracket and one round of the championship bracket. In the team race, UNK is tied for fifth (7.0 points) with Minnesota State-Mankato. UNO, who went 8-1 in round one, is in the lead with 16.0 points while Augustana is second (12.0). Winning first round matches were seniors Bryce Abbey (125 lbs.) and Aaron Dalton (165 lbs.), junior Jeff Sylvester (197 lbs.) and redshirt freshman Tervel Dlagnev (Hwt.) Abbey (Goodland, Kans.), ranked 4th nationally, majored Chas Welch of Northern State, 11-1, while Dalton (Fremont), ranked 5th nationally, got by Jacob Tizzi of Gannon (Pa.), 7-4. At the higher weights, Sylvester (Lyman) pinned Daryl Scott of Anderson (S.C.) at 5:36 and Dlagnev (Arlington, Texas) edged Chris Beitz of Augustana, 7-5. Four of the five Lopers who lost were the underdog. The lone exception was Kearney senior Adam Keiswetter at 133 lbs. Ranked fifth nationally, he lost 3-1 to unranked Mike Hansen of Central Missouri State. Mitchell sophomores Matt (141 lbs. ) and Pat True (149 lbs.) ran into some top individuals in their class. Pat was majored by No. 1 ranked Ryan King of Augustana, 13-5, while Matt, ranked 8th in his class, fell to 5th-ranked Thad Benton of Pittsburgh-Johnstown, 6-2. For the second time this year, Idaho junior Zac Rice (174 lbs.) lost to UNO's Steve Conlin. He fell today by just a 3-2 count after being majored, 16-6, by Conlin in January. Finally, Gretna freshman Dan Hospodka lost to Anthony Morgan of Carson-Newman (Tenn.), 10-5. |
