Wrestling Wins Another Close One

Matmen Unbeaten in the RMAC

            Kearney, Neb. –   The 3rd-ranked Nebraska-Kearney wrestling team continue a recent trend of building big leads and rallying to beat the opposition, beating No. 14 Western State, 23-18, Friday night in Gunnison, Colo.

            UNK (11-3) improves to 4-0 in the RMAC while the Mountaineers fall to 4-3-1 and 3-2 in the league.

            The Lopers came into the match winning its last three duals by a combined 11 points. The close calls continued as UNK built an 11-0 lead and then needed wins by nationally-ranked Jeff Sylvester and Tervel Dlagnev to record the dual win.

            Western was aided by a Loper forfeit at 174 lbs. and then got another six points at 184 lbs. when Dillon Waggoner pinned Idaho junior Zac Rice, who usually competes at 174 lbs.

            Down 18-14, top-ranked Sylvester got UNK closer when he beat Cody Mumma, 9-4, at 197 lbs. At heavyweight, Dlagnev recorded his 29th win of the season, and gave UNK the dual win, when he pinned George Coleman at 2:10.

            The Texan, now just eight wins shy of tying the UNK single season record, has nine pins among his 29 victories.

            Also for UNK, senior Adam Keiswetter (133 lbs.) and Mitchell sophomore Matt True (141 lbs.) recorded major decisions.

            The Lopers are at  Colorado School of Mines Saturday night.
