Kearney, Neb. - The 3rd-ranked Nebraska-Kearney wrestling team beat 20th-ranked Mesa State,
33-6, Wednesday night at the Health & Sports Center.
UNK jumped out to 15-0 lead before second-ranked Chase Walker scored the first points of the duel for the Mavericks, by getting a decision over
Jordan Gienger. Mesa followed the Walker win with Matthew Chavez 10-9 decision of
Zach Starostka.
Top-ranked Marty Usman (Arlington, Texas) pinned Justin Grosse in the second period at 174 lbs. Usman got his first pin of the season and first pin since February 2008. Senior
Derek Ross (St. Francis, Kans.) pinned Chris Silinski early in the second period, at 184 lbs. to make it a 30-6 Nebraska-Kearney. Ross collected his fourth pin on the season to improve to 10-11.
The Lopers wrestle at Central Oklahoma Thursday and then having three duals (Oklahoma, New Mexico Highlands, Newman) on Saturday in Texas.
