Tobey National Runner Up in Shot; Now 5-Time All-American

Kearney, Neb. - Nebraska-Kearney's Dane Tobey finished as national runner in the shot put Saturday night at the 2010 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships in Albuquerque, N.M.

The two-day event was held at the Albuquerque Convention Center and hosted by RMAC-member Adams State.

The Grizzlies won its first-ever men's team national title while Lincoln of Missouri again claimed the women's crown. Final results can be found HERE.

Tobey (Waco/Utica-Centennial H.S.) was one of five Lopers to qualify for this year's meet and the only one to earn All-American status (top eight finish).

Last year in this same meet and event, an already banged up Tobey injured his ankle on his first throw and gutted out a ninth place finish.

Tonight, Tobey made up for lost time by throwing 61-0 in his third attempt. In the finals, he would foul on his first two attempts before going 60-11.50 in his sixth and final throw.

The 61-0 was good enough to trail only Ashland's Kurt Roberts (meet record 64-11.50).

Tobey is now a five-time All-American with five top four finishes (two indoor, three outdoor). He is tied with runner Ivan Ivanov and thrower Lance Pfeiffer for the most Division II All-American honors by a UNK man.

Also on Saturday, Franklin senior Sam Murphy finished 10th in the women's shot (46-2) with Kearney sophomore Marty Molina 13th in the triple jump (46-8).

Looking for her third All-American honor, Murphy had two throws of 46-2 and fouled on her other attempt. Ashland's Kelly Ash won the national title with a heave of 51-1.

Battling an ankle injury, Molina's best jump came on his third and final attempt. He went 46-7.50 right out of the gates. Ramon Sparks of Abilene Christian (Texas) won the national title with a leap of 52-3.25.

UNK will begin the outdoor season March 27th in Hastings. Complete results for the NCAA Indoor Championships can be found at www.ncaasports.com.
