Kearney, Neb. - Nebraska-Kearney head track & field coach
Brady Bonsall today announced that Scott Jorgensen is joining the program as an assistant coach and will lead the Loper throwers.
A 2004 UNK graduate, Jorgensen, replaces Andy Meyer, who retired at the end of the 2009-10 year after a successful 13-year run as Loper coach.
“Scott is a great fit for this position. He had success here as a student-athlete working with Andy Meyer. Now, he has the opportunity to be successful here as a coach,” said Bonsall.
Jorgensen most recently was the head football coach, head girls basketball coach and co-head track & field coach at Hayes Center High School. In two years on the grid iron, Jorgensen led his team to two district titles and a 2009 state runner up finish in Class D2.
In track, he led the Hayes Center throwers and coached a two-time district champion and a 2010 state qualifier. He also designed lifting workouts for the entire squad.
Prior to coaching in the prep ranks, Jorgensen was a graduate assistant coach at Fort Hays State from 2004-06. He earned a Master's degree in Health & Human Performance. from Hays as well.
“We heard good things from those who have worked with him at both the college and high school levels. He had great coaching success the last couple of years, so he understands how to work well with students,” said Bonsall.
Among his highlights as a Loper student-athlete was a sixth place finish in the discus at the 2004 NCAA Division II outdoor meet, helping him earn All-American honors. He also made the 2002 NCAA meet in the discus, coming in 11th place.
Bonsall noted UNK will add several more assistant coaches in the coming weeks.
