Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska women's basketball team sunk 10 three pointers and forced 30 turnovers to beat Nebraska-Kearney,
85-55, Sunday afternoon in an exhibition game at the Devaney Center in Lincoln.
This was the 11th straight year the Lopers have played the 'Huskers prior to the regular season. While this was UNK's first game of the year, UNL beat MIAA-member Pittsburg State, 86-55, earlier this week in its exhibition opener.
Facing a young but tall 'Husker team, the Lopers found themselves down by just an 11-6 score six minutes in. That's when UNK's shot stopped falling as UNL went on a 16-3 run covering a seven minute span. During this time, the Lopers had plenty of decent looks but made only one of 13 field goals.
UNL led by 16 after the run and built a 37-16 lead by the break. Over the first 20 minutes, UNK was out rebounded by six, 26-20, but went 7 of 30 (23.3%) from the floor with UNL making 13 of its 34 shots (38.3%). And five of those 13 made buckets came from beyond the arc.
The 'Huskers out scored the Lopers 48-39 in the second half with Kearney warming up to 57.7% (15 of 26) from the field. However, UNK committed 15 turnovers for a second straight period.
Overall, Nebraska made 10 of 27 three pointers (37.0%) and won the battle on the glass by nine, 45-36.
After a 24-point, 17 rebound effort vs. Pitt State, sophomore Jordan Hooper had 28 points and six rebounds against the Lopers. She was one of seven 'Huskers to make a triple in the game, going 3 of 6 from down town.
Also for UNL, guard Lindsey Moore had 14 points, seven assists and two steals.
UNK was led by guards
Debi Johnson (Elsie) and
Ivy Jones (Vallejo, Calif.), who combined for 32 points, five rebounds, four steals and three assists.
Johnson tallied 15 of her 20 points in the second half as she made 8 of 18 shots from the field. Jones, in her first game as a Loper, went 5 of 12 from the floor to score 12 points.
Off the bench, senior guard
Kim Rickels (Iowa City, Ia.) had six points, four rebounds, three assists and three steals in 21 minutes.
During the second half, play was stopped for several minutes as Minden senior forward
Lea Ann Jameson was injured. As a precautionary measure, she was taken off the floor via stretcher and briefly spent time in the hospital. After being checked out by medical staff, she returned to Kearney Sunday night.
