Women Have Four Chosen All-MIAA

Vanessa Gunawan
Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska-Kearney women's tennis team has placed four players on the 2013 All-MIAA team.

The squad, consisting of a first and second team as well as honorable mention, is chosen by the league's 12 head coaches.

Junior Vanessa Gunawan (Indonesia) earned second-team honors at No. 1 singles with junior Heather Connolly (Highland Village, Texas) and sophomore Tealyn Trimble (Kearney H.S.) receiving honorable mention accolades at No. 4 and No. 5 singles, respectively.

At No. 3 doubles, Trimble and sophomore Kelly Messbarger (Kearney Catholic H.S.) were named honorable mention as well.

Gunawan went 22-2 in singles, falling only to MIAA Player of the Year Fanni Varga of Southwest Baptist and to Augustana's Katie Jesperson.  Playing most of her singles matches in the fourth spot, Connolly went 12-11 with Trimble posting a 17-3 overall mark, going 5-0 when playing in the fifth position.

UNK used many doubles combinations throughout the year with Messbarger and Trimble being paired late this spring. The duo went 6-0, including two wins in the MIAA Tournament.

The Lopers went an impressive 19-7 (6-4 MIAA) this season, just missing out on making the 48-team NCAA Tournament.

This year, only four bids were available for the Central Region and they were taken by Southwest Baptist (19-1), Northeastern State (22-2), Central Oklahoma (16-3) and NSIC-member Augustana (20-2).
