Lopers Fly By Jets in OT, 79-74

Kearney, Neb. – Graduate transfer Alyssa Frauendorfer scored a game-high 26 points to help the Nebraska-Kearney women's basketball team rally past Newman University, 79-74 in overtime, Friday evening in Hays, Kan.

The Lopers (3-0) remain unbeaten while the Jets, from Wichita, fall to 4-1.

UNK trailed for 28 minutes and was down by as many as 14 points in the second half. From the Heartland Conference, Newman got out to that big lead thanks to 12 made threes and 25 Loper turnovers.

The comeback started at 7:24 of the third quarter when Grand Island senior guard McKenzie Brown hit a triple. Soon after, a Frauendorfer block turned into a fast break layup for Missouri freshman Adreon Bell and UNK was down just nine, 40-31.

Newman did rebound to lead 47-36 at the end of the quarter. However, UNK outscored the Jets 24-13 over the final 10 minutes with Frauendorfer having nine points and four rebounds. She also didn't miss a shot, going 3 of 3 from the line and floor.

The Lopers held two three point leads late in the fourth but a triple from Erica Lerich put Newman ahead again, 60-58, with just 44 seconds left. Frauendorfer tied things 14 seconds later and then the Lopers had to survive two missed Jets shots in the final eight seconds to go into OT.

UNK never trailed in the final five minutes as they went 10 for 10 at the line and 4 of 6 from the field. Redshirt sophomore guard Jenna Gillespie (Holdrege) hit a three with senior guard Michaela Barry (Battle Creek) going 6 of 6 at the line.

Frauendorfer played a team-high 39 minutes and reached her point total by going 9 of 14 from the field (1 of 2 threes) and 7 of 9 at the line. She also had a team-best nine rebounds (two offensive), a block, steal and assist.

Next, Barry sunk 11 of 12 freebies to score 17, Brown hit three triples to tally 14 and junior forward Jaymie Bernbeck (Garden City, Kans.) continued her fine play by having 10 points and eight rebounds (seven defensive). Off the bench, Bell had six assists in 17 minutes.

Newman saw reserve Bria DeGrate go for 24 points on 7 of 16 (4 of 8 threes) shooting. Sixteen of those points came in the first half with six other Jets between five and nine points.

UNK faces Colorado-Colorado Springs Saturday at 2 p.m. The Mountain Lions (0-3) fell at Fort Hays State tonight, 81-51.
