Once A Loper, Always A Loper
It has been said that it takes a village to raise a successful athletic program. As the front porch to the institution, our department and the NU Foundation takes pride in the support provided by those who have paved the way for our current athletes.
Once A Loper, Always A Loper is designed to build relationships between athletic alumni and current student athletes through mentorships, education and networking opportunities. The goal of our athletics program extends far beyond success and winning on the field of play, the focus is also to build well rounded young adults who have engaged in experiences through the fostering of relations, a commitment to service, and development of life skills. Each year UNK Athletics will host four events, each designed with a particular focus to develop relationships between alumni and student-athletes in a unique way.
Guide to Booster Activities
Freshman Meet and Greet
This activity allows some of our supportive alumni to network and meet incoming freshmen. Often times, student athletes are overwhelmed with so many changes taking place. Moving to a new place, taking on responsibilities and making new friends while adjusting to campus life all contribute to a high level of stress. As alumni, you can share your expertise in how to deal with these factors as well as provide a supportive means of communication for these new Lopers. The event is held in conjunction with a Loper volleyball or football game each year and is an informal meeting help prior to the start of the game. Freshman and alumni introduce themselves and have time to share experiences. We also address ways that alumni can engage with athletes and visa versa.
You can engage with Alumni by:
• Thanking them for their support at your games.
• Saying hello if you see them of campus.
• Sending them a thank you or invite to your events.
• Asking how you can help with a cause and or organization they are passionate about.
You can support the Lopers by:
• Attending events throughout the year (i.e. home and away contests.)
• Sending a congratulations or letter of encouragement to the team or individuals.
• Staying educated on how the team is doing.
• Mentor a student athlete. (Please see permissible activities in the provided Guide to Booster Activities).
• Stay after games to speak with players.
• Attend alumni specific events like this one.
• Attend pregame and postgame activities (i.e. tailgating, autograph sessions, etc.)
• “Like” the Lopers on Facebook, “Follow” us on Twitter and watch us on YouTube.
• Have an individual or team over for an occasional function at your home. (please see permissible activities in the provided Guide to Booster Activities).
• Check with coaches about specific program needs and how you can support their efforts.
• Support the Loper Fund.
• Purchase a spirit plate and display your Loper Pride. (Visit www.unk.edu/loperplates).
Sophomore Thank-A-Thon
This activity allows our student-athletes to connect with some of our most supportive fans and donors. In a partnership with the NU Foundation, our student athletes will make direct calls to season ticket holders, Loper Fund supporters, sponsors and contributors to endowed scholarships to thank them for their contribution to our program. This activity will help to connect the relationship between our student athletes and those who share in the success they strive for.
Junior Career Fair Prep
This activity will consist of matching student athletes with local alumni who have an expertise in their specific major. Mock interviews will be conducted with junior student athletes to help prepare them for their future endeavors after college. This activity will also help student athletes develop a network and potential references as they begin their careers.
Senior Student-Athlete Recognition Banquet
This event is a celebration of Loper achievement which places student athletes, donors, and sponsors alike in the same room for a final farewell to a great class. Coaches speak about each student athlete and their contribution while recognizing donors, alumni and supporters of their programs.
