Kearney, Neb. – In its first tournament of the spring, the Nebraska-Kearney women's golf team shot a 36-hole total of 700 to place second at the Wayne State Spring Invite.
The two-day tournament featured five schools and was played Sunday and Monday at the par 72 Wayne Country Club.
Nationally-ranked Nebraska-Omaha (650) easily won the tournament as the Mavericks had five golfers in the top six. After a 359 on Sunday, UNK shot a 341 on Monday to move past Wayne (704) for second place.
Also in the field were Morningside (761) and the Wildcats "B" team (788)
Hastings freshman Sara Wissing led the Loper cause by shooting a 165 (84-81) to finish in third place. She had one birdie and the second most pars (18) in the tournament.
UNO's Abby Weddle paced the field with a 157 (78-78) with her teammate, Danielle Suponchick, coming in second with a 163 (83-80).
Also for the Lopers, senior Megan Marshall tied for eighth (175/91-84), sophomores Thea Baum and Emily Carlson tied for 11th (180) and freshman Nicole Erwin came in 15th place (187). Carlson actually led the entire tournament in birdies with four.
UNK plays at Fort Hays State early next week.
